Should my small office require any fire protection?
For most cases, it is indeed mandatory to install some form of fire protection. Though there are a few exceptions, it is recommended that your facility is adequately equipped to deal with the threat of fire.
How do I know if my fire extinguisher is still working?
Here are some signs that your extinguisher is not recommended for use:
Low pressure (indicated on pressure gauge)
Corrosion or damage to chassis
Missing anti-tamper safety pin
What type of fire protection is best for me?
Some of the most commonly seen and used fire protection equipment are the fire alarm system and fire extinguishers. However, do note that certain guidelines and restrictions apply varying on the type of facility the equipment are installed upon.
I’m looking to carry out some Addition and Alteration (A&A) works. What do I need?
Depending on the type of usage and facility, you may require specific fire safety solutions, a plan destined for approval, and competent hands to do it for you.
What will I need to attain a Fire Certificate for my facility?
In order for your facility to be approved for operations, the fire safety equipment on site has to be well maintained and in operational condition according to the approved designs of the item and installation. The tests also have to be verified by a Qualified Person (QP).
My fire safety equipment hasn’t been maintained or is faulty. What should I do?
Poorly maintained fire protection systems fail to serve their functions of saving lives and property. It is also illegal and puts the safety of all occupants of a building in jeopardy.
I have a blue or green fire extinguisher. Is that usable?
New fire extinguishers in Singapore now have standardised colour codes. They should all come in RED. Blue or green cases were once used to indicate the extinguishing medium of the extinguisher. These have been discontinued and if you are in possession of one, it is recommended you replace it with a new one.

Is there a lifespan for these fire extinguishers?
Fire extinguishers generally have a lifespan of 10 years, with the exception of Carbon Dioxide extinguishers which have a lifespan of 5 years. At the end of the 5 or 10 years, it is recommended that you send it back to us for a Hydrostatic Test or replace it with a new one.
Which extinguishing medium should I go for?
Each extinguishing medium has different properties which should be used appropriately. Understanding the type of fire will help you determine the extinguishing medium to use. Instructions printed on each fire extinguisher will also provide more information on what types of fires you can use them for.
